I’m ashamed to admit that on my first visit to Croatia, I had little to no expectations for how amazing this country and the dalmatian coast really are. I was primarily going to Croatia for Hideout Festival on the island of Pag, but because we’d vaguely heard of Hvar through friends- a little island just off the coast from Split, we decided to take a little detour there on our road trip to the festival.
Nothing could have prepared me for how breathtakingly beautiful and charming Hvar is and I can’t recommend it enough to you – families, couples, travellers, groups of friends, there is something for everyone here.
1. It’s nicknamed the Monaco of Croatia
With the towering and pristine super yachts lining Hvar Town’s port, it’s easy to see how Hvar has earned it’s nickname as the Monaco of Croatia. Hvar is without a doubt a playground for the rich and famous with Prince Harry, Beyonce, Kevin Spacey, Steven Spielberg and Eva Longoria all enjoying holidays here.
2. It’s only a short ferry ride from Split
During the summer, the ferry from Split to Stari Grad (on Hvar) runs between 4-7 times a day! Whether you are on foot or in a vehicle, you can jump on the ferry and be in Hvar within 2 hours.
3. There’s great restaurants and nightlife
You are spoiled for choice for restaurants and bars in Hvar, but you HAVE to visit Carpe Diem which is round the port in Hvar Town. With great music and lots of pretty European types supping on bubbly, Carpe Diem is not just a bar – oh no, it has it’s own party island! Patrons are ferried there to dance and drink until the sun comes up, epic or what?
When your money gets tight then Kiva is the place for you – it’s perfect for backpackers and has cheap drinks and a great atmosphere.
Of course, you’ll need to refuel to maintain your energy and Hvar offers the most incredible seafood at all its restaurants. We loved Giaxa, which is fine dining at its best! The restaurant is located in a Medieval Croatian palace which is certainly fitting for its exquisite food – definitely check this place out!
4. Speaking of amazing bars, Hula Hula Bar is THE spot for apres Beach!
Just a short walk round the coast from the Hotel Amfora, Hula Hula bar is relaxed, cool sunbathing spot by day and lively, party bar by night! The atmosphere at Hula Hula bar is better than anything I’ve experienced in Ibiza! It’s fun and wild like an Ibizan beach party but minus the horrible drunks that always ruin it for everyone. We spent an amazing day here and I highly recommend getting the seafood platter for lunch and the Hula Hula mojitos to watch the sun set.
5.You can island hop to the neighbouring Pakleni Islands
As well as exploring Hvar itself! Hire a boat or make some friends and jump on theirs and go on an adventure around the coast line. Hvar is a host stop to many ‘Yacht Weeks’ which take place across the summer and see groups sailing the coast of Croatia alongside each other. This is definitely on my bucket list now as we were there during American Yacht week – it looks SO much fun!
6. It’s a familiar concept, but COMPLETELY different from anywhere you’ve been before
You think you know the formula well; going on a summer holiday to a European beach party destination for a week of sun, sea and sand. Yes, Hvar does indeed tick all of these boxes, but the atmosphere on Hvar is like nothing I have experienced before. Relatively still under the radar, Hvar epitomises class and pure escapism, oozing picturesque charm and pizzazz in equal measure; it is Dalmatia’s trendiest destination for a reason. Go now, before too many people catch on!
